Why would I single you out?

You tell me. I know plenty of inmates don't think highly of me.

[Not expressly true, exactly, but there are definitely showier personalities around hogging the limelight. Bigger threats.]

And I'm not telling you do to anything. I'm just saying when people say "I'll just move on", they don't. You're going to think about this every time you pass me in the halls.

Then I'll think about it every time I pass you in the halls no matter what we say to each other now.

How much do you remember about what happened?

[Does she remember the way June had practically pushed William at her in her efforts to escape?]

Everything. If my head was turned that way, I saw it.

It's all a blur to me. I barely knew what I was doing.

[June hesitates briefly - because yes, that is exactly the point that she was getting at, and she's frankly a little suspicious that Tess is agreeing with her so readily. Aren't she and William friends?]

[In a calm, friendly-sounding tone:]

People don't always agree on what the smart thing to do is, Tess. Especially when they think they've been given the short end of the stick. I'd keep that in mind if I were you.

You think I need a reminder of that after twenty years of living with Infection?

[Tess feels a flare of frustration, white-hot, but it fades before she decides to speak on William's shit. That's his problem.]

Bullshit! You had a say in what you did right until the minute I bit you and you turned.

I chose the smart option; the only real option. I had a choice the way someone who sticks their hand in boiling water has a choice about whether they pull it out or leave it in.

[The words feel bitter in her mouth, and she sucks her teeth. Tess is right. She won't admit it - not to her, not right now, not at a time when giving in feels like weakness - but she remembers what it had felt like to genuinely not have a choice in her actions. The difference had been astronomical.]

Look - I don't like you. You don't like me. But we clearly both know what it means to have to make tough choices to save ourselves. I'd appreciate you reminding William about what that's like. That's all.
