What will you do if I decide not to tell them anything? Will you make that decision for me?

It's not a decision I should make for you. I won't. But I do think that, if you don't do that, you won't be able to graduate.

[littlebattles]

I'll think about it.

[She says, more to try to appease him than because she actually intends to. And while the assurance that he won't out her does relax her a little, it's less because she actually believes him and more because now she can use that as leverage if he ever changes his mind.]

Maybe in a few months. After more time has passed.

I urge you to give it some thought, certainly.

[He's not going to out her himself, but he's not going to just let her dodge it forever, either. He'll bring it up after a few weeks if she doesn't. And he suspects she won't.]

Sure. Was there anything else you wanted to talk about?

[She tries to smile, and tries to make it look relaxed and easy, but it comes off as pained instead.]

[He thinks it over, carefully. He has a few questions, but he doesn't want to push her too far. Perhaps just one that should be easy.]

How would you describe your relationship with your sister? Your file talks about her, but that's not the same thing.

Jessica?

[June asks, surprised; it's not a question she'd been expecting.]

She was a brat when we were kids, and she grew up to be just as snotty and uptight as you'd expect. She held every favor she ever did for me over my head.

[She lets out a dry chuckle.]

I'd describe our relationship as strained.

[How people relate to those closest to them says a lot about them.]

That sounds quite difficult. I assume your parents often took her side?

[littlebattles]

Our dad did. She was his gifted little angel.

[fork_off]

[Perhaps that is one of the root of her assumption that no one will take her side?]

My youngest sister was similar. She could have gotten away with murder if he was the judge.

[littlebattles]

Did your dad disinherit you, too?

[fork_off]

No, though I wasn't close to him even before I went to sea. I'm sure your childhood was more fractious than mine.

[littlebattles]

What about your mom? Were you close?

[fork_off]

Closer than my father, though the one I'm closest to out of my family was my older sister. She's a respectable woman, but not stuffy about it.

[littlebattles]

It must be nice, feeling supported by your family.

[June, your mom continually bailed you out of whatever financial trouble you got yourself into and your father wouldn't have written you out of his will if you didn't have a penchant for pissing away money, so don't even play.]

It does provided a firm foundation for life, I have found. But, there are other places to find support.

[He doesn't completely disbelieve everything she says, but when she starts sighing over how easy others had it or how hard her life was, he is a bit on guard.]

I've found that relying on myself is the best way to go.

[fork_off]

I would argue that it's not always the best way. There are times when one must rely on others.

[When, for instance, you only have one leg and are recovering from having the other one cut off.]

And when you pick the wrong person, where does that get you?

[fork_off]

Depending on how badly you chose, you could be right buggered. But you should use the information you gained from that to make a better choice the next time.

[littlebattles]

And what if the better choice is going it alone?

Plenty of people have let me down and screwed me over, but I've never screwed myself over.

[fork_off]

And when you get yourself stuck in a spot you can't get out of on your own? Are you content to just die that way?

[littlebattles]

No. But I'm pretty good at getting out of jams on my own.

[fork_off]

Pretty good isn't perfect.

[littlebattles]

If you want perfection out of anything, Thomas, you're going to be waiting for a long time.
